Doca do Cavacas: Dining Above the Ocean in Funchal

Score: 7.4

Some places stand the test of time — and Doca do Cavacas in Funchal is one of them. For decades, both locals and tourists have made their way to this iconic spot. And let’s be honest: the location plays a big part in that. A long staircase takes you down from the boulevard to the sea, offering stunning views of the ocean and the natural lava pools just beneath the restaurant as you descend.

We visited Doca do Cavacas for both lunch and dinner, choosing a table on the rooftop terrace each time. Up here, you get uninterrupted views of the coastline and endless Atlantic horizon. Honestly, the view alone is worth the visit.

As for the food, Doca do Cavacas stays true to its roots, serving traditional Madeiran fare. We started with two appetizers. The vongole (clams) were slightly disappointing in texture — a bit too chewy — though flavour-wise, they were solid. The squid with prawns, however, was absolutely fantastic: perfectly cooked, rich in flavour with garlic, olive oil, and a touch of lemon. A real standout.

For lunch, we had Dourade — simple, fresh, and beautifully grilled. At dinner, we went for lobster tail and Espada, the black scabbardfish you’ll find on nearly every menu in Madeira. Both dishes were excellent.

Dessert left us with mixed feelings. The apple pie was a forgettable factory-made slice, but the passion fruit tart more than made up for it. Naturally, we ended with a classic Portuguese espresso.

In short: Doca do Cavacas offers a magical setting, friendly service, and solid, traditional cooking. It’s the kind of place you know will still be around twenty years from now — and rightly so.
