Tranquil Charm and Culinary Delights at Le Pommiers, Normandy

Score: 8.2

Thanks to a tip I saw on Facebook, I got in touch with the owners of Chambre d’hôtes Le Pommiers, located in the small village of Fréville, Normandy. A visit to this region had been on my list for a while — especially because of its D-Day history — so I spontaneously booked a two-night stay, including a tour with host Menno. I’ve already shared that tour in a separate social post, but take my word for it: it’s a must.

We arrived late Thursday afternoon — northern Normandy is just a bit farther than you’d think. Brenda greeted us warmly upon arrival. Our room? Spacious, spotless, and equipped with everything we needed. We unpacked, grabbed a drink, and settled onto the terrace to enjoy the peace and quiet. What more could you want?

The surrounding area is truly rural — and absolutely silent. Perfect for unwinding completely. A little later, Menno returned from a D-Day tour with two other guests staying at Le Pommiers. They spontaneously joined us, and the conversation quickly turned lively — especially when we realised we had a bunch of mutual friends and connections. Things got even more surreal when the last guests of the evening arrived… and turned out to live just 200 metres from us back home! The atmosphere was instantly warm and welcoming.

That evening, Brenda and Menno treated us to a fantastic home-cooked meal. We started with a generous fruits de mer platter featuring prawns, oysters, and crab. Then came a perfectly cooked piece of salmon with baby potatoes, asparagus, and egg. Everything was beautifully seasoned. The house wine? Dangerously good — and, like the rest of the drinks, very reasonably priced.

At night, it was pitch dark and dead quiet. For those of us used to the constant glow of streetlights and the hum of traffic, it felt like pure luxury. We slept like babies and woke up refreshed to an incredible breakfast: crusty baguette, buttery croissants, eggs, cold cuts, cheese, jam, coffee, tea — the works.

Brenda and Menno are warm, generous hosts who truly know how to make you feel at home. If you really want to learn about the D-Day history of the region, book a tour with Menno. His storytelling brings the past vividly to life.

Le Pommiers is the kind of place you visit to slow down — and once you leave, you just know you’ll be back.
